Written Work: List ten things that get in the way of your writing. (My life is boring; my mom would be shocked; I don't know where to start; I don't have time, I have seven kids.) Go back and write a sentence about how to deal with each issue. Idea: "I have seven kids. I'll sit down with them during homework time and write a paragraph using their spelling words." "My mom would be shocked. I'll write my love story as if it happened to someone else." Now, use your ten sentences to write a mission statement called "I'm Going to Write, and Here's How."
1. I'm not very good I'll do it anyway and get better as I go along. Like hip hop aerobics. Or not.
2. I have no niche Eventually I'll find one, sometimes common is better than unique.
3. I lack inspiration Think of Jo March.
4. little boy and baby boy As soon as they are tucked in and dreaming, for as long as I need, even if the dishes aren't done.
5. cooking, cleaning, laundering, weeding I will make these into routine, rather than roadblocks.
6-10. see numbers 1-5
I'm Going to Write, and Here's How:
I connect when I write, with myself, with the medium. I unwind, I rev up, I think, I feel, I wear no hat and have no schedule, at once I clear my head and fill it . I have no vices (blogging?), few outlets, therefore I must put more writing into my life, as I must put more exercise into my life. I will benefit and by extension my family will benefit. I will schedule the day-to-day mundane and necessary household tasks so that time for writing can fill in the teensy gaps between sending babes to dreamland and my own beauty sleep. I will write instead of fill my virtual shopping cart with wish-list items. I will write instead of organize my pantry again and again. I will write instead of fold my husbands t-shirts. He won't keep them folded anyway. I will write instead of prowl the aisles of Target for things I may or may not need. In words nearly immortal: I will just do it.
