Skankified?

We'll forget for the moment about the shiny teal grean disaster with gargantuan bow that my mother insisted I wear to prom many years ago. Forced me to wear is more like it. I hated it passionately and I'm sure there are still, unfortunately, some dresses out there like unto it. But, I'm a bit alarmed at the styles now being marketed to teenage girls as "prom" dresses. The advertising, which is everywhere, uses models much older than high-school age and terms like "sexy" and "drive him wild." Don't they grow up fast enough? Shouldn't we be fighting to preserve what is pure and sweet, rather than thrusting adulthood and worldliness upon them at the tender ages of 15 or 16? Am I out of line thinking that these dresses are very adult, very revealing, and a little bit too vixen? Perhaps leaning toward skanky? My own parents, their fashion sense at times questionable, thankfully always stood their ground on issues of modesty. Had I even suggested considering maybe looking at a dress like in these photos, I would surely have been skinned alive. The bottom line is this: what message are these girls receiving about their self worth if the material world bombards them with these influences and suggestions?

Unfortunately, not only are we teaching girls to be skanky, but that their popularity depends on it. So, they develop eating disorders and serious insecurity when they don't look like this. It makes me N-U-T-S. And as the mother of a little girl who doesn't watch much t.v. {read: PBS} it's maddening that there's still some of this seeping in under the door without my permission.

I whole-heartedly agree!

This world is so nasty and evil that it has most girls believing that this is the road to success in life and the more like a vixen, the better. Sad, but oh so true.

Those pictures are CRAZY! My daughter would never be allowed to wear something like this and it is horrible to think that TONS of girls will show up wearing those exact dresses this year to tons of Proms. The media is horrible and girls fall into the traps over and over again.

seriously?!?! I hope parents out there exercise their power and not allow their daughters to wear such "skankified" dresses. I know I would be mortified if Jack's date showed up in something like that. But I hope he would use his better judgement to not ask out a girl who would wear such a thing. The things we have to look forward to...
