The Maiden Voyage

First blog, ever. Hesitation is setting in, but here, now, is a place to preserve, express, discover, connect, remember, to have a voice. Even if I'm the only one who cares what it is I have to say.

Today I say this: Autumn is without a doubt my favorite season: cozy sweaters and great boots, fresh air, vivid colors, comfort foods and all the wonderful smells they bring. Fall has been lovely, though unusually damp and chilly, here in IF. The chilly evenings have inspired me in the kitchen. Here is a favorite recipe from my childhood that never fails to please everyone--it's sort of our inaugural autumn meal. Simple and wholesome, perfect with crusty bread and an apple dessert.
Rustic 5 Hour Stew
4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut bite size
4-6 carrots, peeled and chopped, bite size
2-3 celery stalks, chopped, bite size
1 yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced
2 pounds beef stew meat, bite size
1 Tbsp. worcestershire
1 clove garlic, minced
1 can stewed tomatoes, cut
2 cans condensed tomato soup
1 bay leaf
1 Tbsp. tapioca (not pudding, not pearls)
salt and pepper to taste (probably more than you think!)
Layer potatoes, veggies and meat in slow-cooker. Add remaining ingredients, and add 1 soup-can of water. Cover and cook on low a minimum of 5 hours. Extra-good if assembled the night before, refrigerated over night, and then cooked all the next day. Remove bay leaf before serving.
